Post-Holiday Gratitude

Our NYC Grandchildren and Their Parents

Driving home from the airport after dropping off our NYC grandchildren and their parents, I felt so sad that they had departed, and our Christmas visit was over.

And then I reminded myself how lucky I was to feel that way! Advice columns are full of counsel on how to deal with difficult relatives during the holidays. I’ve even written a short story about such a family! So, I’m aware that my husband and I have lucked out. We are incredibly blessed to have such loving grandchildren with amazing parents. Not that our family hasn’t had plenty of challenges (goes with the territory), but love, affection, and laughter are in abundance when we’re together.

I loved laughing through reading WACKY WEDNESDAY with our seven-year-old granddaughter, and our eleven-year-old grandson and I could barely tear ourselves away from reading WONDER together. It remains one of my all-time favorite books. On the cusp of pre-teendom, my grandson may be about to lose interest in reading with his grandma, but while he still does, I sure do enjoy every moment.

I have a dear friend who is similarly close to her grandkids. One of her favorite sayings is, “Grandchildren are our compensation for growing old.”

I couldn’t agree more. I’m feeling mighty grateful.
