The Superhero at My House

Recently, a couple of friends made the same comment to me: “I have no idea how you do all you do.”

I suppose for someone long past retirement age, my life is pretty full. Mostly, I write novels. But I also work with a wonderful teenage creative writing student at the Louisville Academy of Fine Arts, attend writing conferences and book events, sing with Joyous Singers, a senior chorus, serve on two boards, and participate in a writing critique group plus my local chapter of Sisters in Crime, Derby Rotten Scoundrels.

Despite that last run-on sentence, I am hardly superwoman. Nope, the real superhero at my house is that lovely man I married, who actually likes cooking, shopping, running errands, and doing projects. Lots and lots of projects, including ones on my behalf.

Case in point: In an effort to recruit new singers, Joyous Singers board members were each asked to post 10-15 flyers and business cards around our respective neighborhoods. Reluctantly, I penciled a full day of posting duties into my calendar. My project-loving spouse said: “Why don’t you let me help you with this?” I wasted no time admitting I was eager for help. He proceeded to spend hours researching every possible place to post our flyers, followed by two days running around posting not 10-15 flyers, but 30 of them!

I have no idea how I managed to marry a man who makes it possible for me to do what I do, but I’m not asking any questions. I’m just damned lucky.

And so very grateful.
